For the purposes of this Code and complementary legislation, the following terms have the meaning attributed to them in this article:

a) «Motorway» - public road intended for rapid traffic, with physical separation of lanes, without level crossings or access to marginal properties, with conditioned access and signposted as such;

b) «Verge» - surface of the public road not specifically intended for vehicle traffic and which borders the carriageway;

c) «Path» - public road specially intended for local traffic in rural areas;

d) «Circulation corridor» - traffic lane reserved for vehicles of a certain type or used for certain transport;

e) «Crossing» - area of intersection of public roads at the same level;

f) «Roadway axis» - longitudinal line, materialized or not, that divides a roadway into two parts, each affecting a direction of traffic;

g) «Entroncamento» - area where public roads join or bifurcate;

h) «Roadway» - part of the public road specially intended for vehicle traffic;

i) «Directional islet» - restricted area of the public road, prohibited to the circulation of vehicles and delimited by a curb or appropriate marking, intended to guide traffic;

j) «Locality» - area with buildings and whose limits are marked with regulatory signs;

l) «Car park» - place exclusively intended for parking vehicles;

m) «Level crossing» - place of intersection at the same level of a public road or similar to railway lines or branches;

n) «Promenade» - surface of the public road, generally raised, especially intended for pedestrian traffic and which borders the carriageway;

o) «Special lane» - public road or traffic lane specially designated, according to signage, for the transit of pedestrians, animals or certain types of vehicles;

p) «Rotunda» - square formed by an intersection or junction where traffic moves in a rotating direction and signposted as such;

q) “Vulnerable users” - pedestrians and cyclists, in particular, children, the elderly, pregnant women, people with reduced mobility or people with disabilities;

r) «Slowing lane» - traffic lane resulting from the widening of the carriageway and intended to allow vehicles leaving a public road to slow down outside the main traffic flow;

s) «Acceleration lane» - traffic lane resulting from the widening of the carriageway and intended to allow vehicles entering a public road to acquire the appropriate speed to join the main traffic flow;

t) «Reversible direction road» - traffic lane alternately affects, through signage, one or the other of the traffic directions;

u) «Traffic lane» - longitudinal area of the road intended for the circulation of a single row of vehicles;

v) «Road equivalent to public road» - land communication route in the private domain open to public traffic;

x) «Public road» - land communication route used for public traffic;

z) «Road reserved for cars and motorcycles» - public road where the rules governing traffic on motorways are in force and signposted as such;

aa) «Parking area» - place on the public road specially designated, by construction or signage, for the parking of vehicles;

bb) «Coexistence zone» - area of public roads specially designed for shared use by pedestrians and vehicles, where special traffic rules apply and signposted as such.
